ABOUT INFERTILITY

Infertility is defined as the failure to fall pregnant within one year of unprotected sexual intercourse.

It is estimated that approximately one third of couples world wide experience infertility. In 40% of cases the problem lies mainly with the man, in 40% of cases mainly with the woman and in 35% of cases more than one causative factor is involved. In 10% of cases no cause can be defined despite exhaustive investigations.

Thus, it is important for both partners to undergo investigations so as to ascertain the cause of infertility and its relevant treatment.

Factors which may contribute to infertility:

Age : Both men and women are most fertile in their early twenties. Fertility decreases gradually until 34 years and more rapidly thereafter. As age progresses, chromosomal abnormalities of the fertilised egg and the male sperm increase. These chromosomal defects lead to treatment failures. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) can be offered to select chromosomal normal embryos. Normal embryos are then transferred into the womb for further development.

Frequency of intercourse :  Fertility will be adversely affected by a decrease in frequency.

Exposure: Should all factors be favourable, pregnancy rate will approximately be as follows:

  • 25% of patients will fall pregnant during the first month,
  • 75% of patients will fall pregnant within 9 months,
  • 90% of patients will fall pregnant within 18 months.
